EPISODE 9

Whether she enjoyed it or not, that was her own headache.
I couldn't hold my breathe any more. I finally broke the silence and asked, "Atswei, while eating, let me use that as a medium to ask you this question because I'm actually on my way out. I'm a bit late because of you. One of my colleagues is getting married tomorrow and..." I didn't finish with my statement and she jumped in. "Wooow, wedding? Tomorrow? That was the main reason why I even came around. Your mother sent me to tell you to get her some money. She's attending a wedding tomorrow. The person happens to be a very close relation so she needs to present nice items".
Wedding? My mother? Close relation? Then who could that be? She could have at least called me to inform me before sending her over. I went ahead to ask her, "so she gave you my address and phone number and you also decided never to call? What if you came to meet my absence?". She laughed it off and said, "I don't use any phone. The number was given to me to be used in case of any difficulty,  but I didn't encounter any. I set off around 1:30am and I'm expected to return soon".

Hmmmm...well, our old ladies will never change. I got her a phone so she could have at least called or flashed me. I just didn't seem to understand her. I tried reaching her. She picked as soon as I called. Mum: "Dede, Atswei ba su lo? Ekpa mo p33, ope n3 ong) sika ham....ele kaa ong3 saminya ebi yo kae p3...noko omagye ooo, omany3 maba wem h)gba aloo h)gbi lo?....eng3 noko ne made mo s3 ebi ny33 m'ade o ng3 fon n).
( Dede, has Atswei arrived? Please do well to get me the money. I know you are fine my only daughter. Before you go, can you come home on Sunday or Monday? I have this news I want to break to you. It won't be appropriate to do it on phone"). That was krobo language.
What at all was wrong with this woman? She wouldn't wait for me to even say a word. All she did was to rattle and rattle.

Me: "Eeerm, mama, ebi ny3 m'aba wem ooo l) k3 omany3 k3 ma wo be ekpa aa (I can't make it home now so if it will be possible, let's postpone the meeting)". She gladly understood it, but one thing was for sure when she said, "yooo, mo l33 ekpa mo p33 obo m)den n3 ong) sika k3 ha Atswei ne ewo dwa ham....ole kaa ew3 ne mab)ne ehe pem kaa nomoyo (Okay, but please give Atswei the money so that I go and make my shopping. You know I'm not too old to look good.)

I laughed and hanged up.
Atswei was almost done with her food. She was enjoying the oat and milk. "Atswei, sorry for disturbing you but who is this close relation mum is talking about?", I enquired. She didn't know the person by name. All she did know was that the person has been coming around for some time. I sighed and stood up. I reached for my drawer n got an amount of 400.00 for her. "Please give it to the old woman. Tell her that is all I have to offer. I'm not sure I can send her money next month because it's been less than two weeks since I sent her money.

As you can see, I'm left with nothing in my drawer"... (thank God I hid the money under my bed when I heard the knock on my door. I left that to be given to the person if it were to be an armed robber. I also put huge amount of money I will be needing for the shopping in my bag while she was bathing).
She nodded her head as I explained to her. She seemed to be getting worried for me when I said I had no money on me. I told her not to worry. All I needed her to do was to hurriedly eat so I would get a vehicle for her,  because I was on my way out.
