EPISODE 7
I helped her to her room and excused myself. As I slept on my bed, I could not help but bath myself with my tears.
Heaven knows we need never be ashamed of our tears, for they are rain upon the blinding dust of earth, overlying our hard hearts. I felt better after I had cried. I was now aware of my own ingratitude and inhuman lifestyle.
How can I face her the next day? As for Esparanza, I call on the cold hands of deadly disease to touch her. She had the full guts to disgrace me. What impudence!
I couldn't sleep throughout the night. I checked the time and realised it was already day break. I took my bath and prepared for work.
I remembered I had to check on Achiaa and say goodbye to her. She was locking her door when I got there. I greeted her and asked of her health. She looked cheerful as if nothing had happened the previous day.
"I came to check on you and tell you I'm going to work", I said. "Awww thanks dear. I'm off to work as well. I'm going to the Health Directorate. What of you?", she retorted.
The word 'dear' got me smiling...but, did she say she was going to the Health Directorate? "That is exactly where I'm going to", I gladly responded.
We walked together. When we got to Esparanza's door, she turned to ask, "You didn't return with Esparanza. I hope everything is fine. Anyway, let me check on her." Esparanza came out as soon as she heard Achiaa's voice. You could tell that she was tipsy. She hid her face when she saw me. I wasn't ready to visit that issue.
We were running late for work so I prompted Achiaa for us to leave. She was such a humble girl. One could read from afar that she was such a humble girl who has been inflicted with the sharp edges of pain. The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, struggle, loss and have found their way out of depths. These persons have a sensitivity and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness and a deep loving concern.
She gently followed me when I asked that we left.
We were both silent as we walked to work. I managed to break the silence. "Naa, I'm really sor....", she stopped me in the middle of my statement. "It's past. Let's focus on what this day has for us," she said.
Hmmmm...how many of such ladies do we have in this world?
